Get Out There And Meet People / July 27th, 2011

It’s getting time to start submitting artwork for both my agents promotions. To that end, I started working on a painting six months ago (slotting it into work I was already doing). B+A are producing a book called “The Best Piece Of Advice Ever” and I was given the phrase “Get Out There And Meet People”. With this being a one off book and my only bit of work being promoted in the states for at least a year I wanted to make this a good painting.
I decided that if I was going to spend a good deal of time working on this painting then it had to be something I was actually interested in doing. I worked hard on the rough and took my time to get it right which was a welcome luxury and really shows in the work I think. I wanted the greeting to be really over the top (as an irony as I am particularly bad at meeting people and generally being a miserable sod!) and so that was my starting point.
I thought it might be a good idea to take scans of the work at intermittent periods throughout the painting process with a vague idea of trying to turn it into a short film/animation showing the work coming to fruition, and so this is what I did, with no idea as to the validity of that notion.
The painting was finished last week and I am pretty happy with the way it came out. If I am being critical I would say some areas don’t have the consistency I would like which is mainly due to the large periods of time elapsing from one session to the next. Overall though I think it’s a strong piece of work.
This week my attention was turned towards looking at the scans I made and how I might make this short animation. To my surprise It was pretty easy to put them into a simple movie making programme and get the images to work together, showing the work coming together from start to finish. It’s quite interesting to see how it all comes together and of course I couldn’t resist putting it to some music I made. You can see the film here.
